Annandale Red Squirrel Group

Founded in 2014, we are a small group of like-minded people that have come together with the common goal which is to see red squirrels thrive once again.

The lower Annan valley encompasses the towns and villages of Lochmaben, Lockerbie, Hoddom, Brydekirk, Gretna and Annan right down to the Solway coast and everywhere in between.

We are always looking for new volunteers of any background, so if you think you could help us in any way please get in touch. There are a wide variety of roles in our area ranging from animal surveys to grey squirrel control, public awareness and fundraising.

2019 Update

Recent surveys have indicated that red squirrel numbers in our area have remained mostly stable over the past few years, despite the constant threat of grey squirrels from all directions. The steady numbers of red squirrels can be attributed largely to our very own dedicated grey squirrel control officer in Annandale, employed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT), and the hard work of numerous estates throughout the Annan valley. The work of the SWT controller is a lifeline to our area but funding is always limited and we must not take this professional effort for granted. We are working hard to make sure that we can get more volunteer controllers in place, and we need help from you!
